Event Lootboxes (a way to bring back old skins through new events)#822

I know lootboxes are a controversial topic, so to start:

  • They would only be earned through the free event pass or some special out-of-game events (e.g. Twitch drop campaigns or prizes for defeating a certain player).
  • They never give duplicates.
  • Each event would have exactly as many lootboxes as it has potential lootbox rewards (so the current event would have 9).

As long as these rules are followed, there’d be nothing predatory about them.

I know that giving old paid skins through events was not planned and was only done as a last-minute thing for this update, but the idea still has merit. There was some minor drama over players not getting compensated for having bought the skins before, and this is intended as a solution to that problem so that the idea could be used in future events.

Whenever a player would get a skin or palette from the event track, they’d instead get a lootbox tied to the event.

The lootbox would give rewards in a random order, but always following these priorities:

  • 1: A selection of specific skins and palettes, including the main new free event skin. (Taking the current event as an example, these would be the Pool Party skins for Clairen, Absa, Olympia and their Black and Summer palettes. Of course, the palettes can only be rolled for if you already have the skin)
  • 2: If you already own all the items from the above catefory, you get another random Rare-tier skin associated with the event, excluding the most recent ones. (In this case, Pool Party Loxodont and Fleet.)
  • 3: If you own all of those, you get another random Rare-tier skin from those available the Bucks shop. (If you already own every Rare skin in the game, then you can save your lootboxes for a future update where more are added.)

If you have never bought one of the skins from the first bullet point, you’d never get any rewards from 2 or 3 just by reaching max level on the event.
