Non-Server Rollback just like in Rivals 1#699

Is it possible to implement rollback just like in rivals 1? I mean, where we didn’t have to rely on servers nor host it the way we do in rivals 2. I wonder whether it is possible or even planned to be implemented one day.

You can do that already using the Listen Servers as a public or private lobby. You can turn on host delay so it acts similar to peer-to-peer multiplayer. Even in Rivals 1, there is a host, it’s just that the delay is shared because the game waits for inputs from both players to advance the game state. A host with symmetric delay is not quite exactly the same but very similar and it works better for 3 or 4 player matches than Rivals 1 multiplayer would.

Thanks for dedicating time to answer me. I appreciate your efforts to clarify it.

The issue is that I used to play Rivals 1 with my buddies from South America with just 60 ping, but in Rivals 2 it’s either 160 ping for me, when they host, or 130 for them when I am the host. We usually use the Miami server, but they also end up getting 120 ping. We tried all diferent servers, but none of them allowed us to have less than 4 delay frames without seeing the opponent skipping frames.

For this specific scenario, is there a better solution? :(

I also need to state that Rivals 2 is my favorite game and that I try to convert new players every day so that this game keeps succeeding.

what you describe is not possible. having a ping of 60 on rivals 1 and then having 130/160 in rivals 2 when self hosted does not make sense. there must be other issues. like your system not being able to handle hosting and playing at the same time etc.

I thought it was the way Rivals 1 roll back worked. That’s why I decided to post here.

I’ve ran a few tests, but it kind of make sense to me because if try to play on the Sao Paulo server I get 150+ ping and if I try to connect directlly to him when he’s hosting, I get something close to that. I can’t see how my system is not being able to handle that. The same happens in the opposite way.

I have a pretty decent computer to play Rivals 2, so I don’t know what to do. It’s just sad because they used to be my training partners when I lived there, but we haven’t been able to play it properly since I moved to North America. The best way we found was playing on the Miami server and adjusting delay frames to 4 or 5. And you know how terrible that can be :(

@RecklessHomeland877 hey man, long-time SA player from Rivals 1 here. The reason for these ping differences is usually due to ISP routing - something about how rivals 1 manages connections is probably making it so you’re getting a better route with your friends than in R2. Fixing this is tricky because it happens on a network layer we don’t really have any control over.

Personally, the only “fix” for this I’ve seen from people for this is to either use a VPN (or host a proxy via a VPS) that has a good route to São Paulo - this will get you around +10ms of latency compared to just rawdogging the connection, but lets you control the route a bit.
