Ranno at the ledge#1131

Considering Ranno is pretty well the only character I run into on ranked these days, I’ve noticed something about how he interacts with ledge play and how good he is when recovering.

Barring the chance that every player I’ve encountered is smurfing, which isn’t out of the question since every Ranno player in existence seems to have Aetherian rank tech skill, Ranno’s up special seems really easy to sweetspot the ledge with. I don’t know the exact hitbox data on it, but he seems to have acquired the same intangibility property as Reina, just minus the hitbox extending up as far. Visually, I’ve put hitboxes out to hit a Ranno up special that seems, visually, downright sloppy, but it’s whiffed right through his arm.

Following that, if you do manage to hit him, he can render the mistake basically meaningless by wall teching and then often acting before you’re out of lag from whatever you did. While this is a thing for every character (and it’s something that I really think needs eyes on it separate from this), the fact that putting him in that position is much more difficult than it looks like it should be is pretty frustrating.

Less of a contributor to this, but still something that’s frustrating, is the amount of vertical stall that he gets at the apex of his up special. I’m aware this is there to allow him to use the second part of the move, but it often lets him beat out your intangible ledge options by stalling for just long enough that a ledge roll, getup, or attack no longer hog the ledge and give him yet another bandait in his recovery.

Ranno’s recovery is by no means linear. He has a dozen different ways he can mix it up, including many that leverage horizontal momentum to recover from distances other characters don’t have a chance to get back from, so adjusting this aspect of the vertical component to be more fair for the person guarding him wouldn’t hurt him that badly.

100% agree.

And i really want to dig into that part:
“he can render the mistake basically meaningless by wall teching and then often acting before you’re out of lag from whatever you did”
this is a HUGE issue with the game and should have been fixed ages ago. it is one thing making wall techs redicilously easy but if the opponent teching, is actionable way before the person that just landed the hit, it becomes a huge issue. Its another reason why edge guarding is so one dimensional because going deep or going for attacks near the wall result in a reversal more often than they work. So the best strategy 9/10 times still is to abuse ledge invul over and over until you stripped the opponent of all their recovery tools. its boring and not hype at all.

and with ranno this is especially bad since his options are so fast and strong in this tech situation while on the other hand him abusing ledge invul is crazy strong given his insane bair. So he has an incredibly good recovery and reversal options on edge guards while he has the easiest edge guard options by abusing ledge invul and that insane down strong that reaches way lower below the ledge than it should, comes out super fast and kills super early. giving both to the same char is not good design imho.
