Sanity check on landing lag#1024

There are a lot of moves in this game that are unreasonably safe on shield for how easy they are to perform in a way that makes them like that. Olympia’s entire kit falls into this category, and so does Zetterburn’s dair. Many moves are able to be “gotten away with” without even spacing correctly. Given how belligerent the game already is, can we have a bit of a sanity check on these?

This actually coincides well with something that bugs me about the game, which is the “press buttons faster = win” aspect of it that it leans into way harder than other current platform fighters. It’s not like you can get rid of this, but there are ways to design around it, and Rivals tends to not do that.

i have mixed feelings about current olympia regarding landing lag. to make her aerials safe you have to time them very precisely low to the ground. it looks easier than it is and i would argue other chars have a much easier time spacing their moves. but i agree with the general notion that most moves are way to safe.

Olympia is pretty underpowered at the moment if anything, just about all she still has is safety on shield and this is easily countered by remembering not to hold shield against her

Olympia unironically needs it. She needs to be able to approach, and 1.5.5 basically butchered her ability to both play neutral and push an advantage. She’s already bottom 1 in the game according to multiple top players (fighting for that right with Maypul and Slade), in no world does she deserve to have the only remaining thing that rewards her for approaching removed. In fact, this was already nerfed in 1.5.5 with respect to dair’s landing lag.

In my opinion, a move’s safety should correspond to 1. it’s risk/reward ration 2. how integral it is to the character actually being allowed to play the game. Zetterburn’s dair is a good example; even though it’s a really fucking good move and I hate it, I also recognize that the alternative is Zetterburn dash dancing in neutral forever and waiting to whiff punish you because he can’t approach and open up his opponent.

tl;dr some stuff deserves to be good.

Let’s be real, the reason it’s like this is because Captain Falcon is like this in Melee.
